Presidents discuss possibilities of settling the status of Donbas
International negotiations on determining the status of territories in eastern Ukraine remain without a unified vision. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced this in an interview with Bloomberg, noting that there are different positions among Ukraine, the USA, and Russia concerning Donbas.
During a phone interview, Zelensky noted that elements of the American plan require further discussion. This is especially true for such sensitive issues as security guarantees and control over Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Negotiations have not yet led to an agreement on Ukrainian Donbas. Zelensky emphasized that Kyiv insists on a separate agreement on security guarantees from Western allies, particularly from the USA.
The president expressed concern: “There is one question that I and all Ukrainians want answered: if Russia starts a war again, what will our partners do?” In the near future, during a visit to London, Zelensky plans to discuss this issue with key partners, among them UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and French President Emmanuel Macron.
It should be noted that the situation in the region has remained tense since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2014. The Ukrainian side will likely continue to vigorously defend its positions, while the international community seeks opportunities to resolve the conflict peacefully.
