In Ukraine, the repair of the first unit at the nuclear power plant has been completed.

Energoatom has completed the repair of the first of the nine power units under Ukraine’s control as part of the preparations for the heating season. This step aims to ensure more stable power supply to the country.

Acting Chairman of the Board of Energoatom, Pavlo Kovtonyuk, reported that after the repair, the power unit No. 2 of the Khmelnytsky Nuclear Power Plant (Khmelnitsky NPP-2) was put into operation and has been operating in the grid since April 28. General Director of Khmelnitsky NPP Andriy Kozyura noted that the planned repair duration, which was 52 days, was shortened by four days thanks to process optimization.

As of today, eight power units are functioning in the power system, while one is undergoing medium-scheduled maintenance. According to Kovtonyuk, the repair campaign, which began in April and is scheduled until October, is aimed at a balanced removal of power units from operation without compromising their performance quality. It has been coordinated with Ukrenergo and aims to enhance the stability of power supply in Ukraine during the heating season.

This event is prompted by Ukraine’s move in March to increase electricity imports to offset potential losses during maintenance at the nuclear power plants. Additionally, the Ukrainian side signed an agreement with the IAEA on nuclear cooperation, indicating the country’s intention to boost its energy independence.
