Rheinmetall has begun the delivery of artillery shells to Ukraine from its new plant
The German defense consortium Rheinmetall has initiated the supply of artillery munitions to Ukraine, manufactured at the new Werk Niedersachsen plant in Unterlüß. The first batch, containing a five-digit number of 155mm RH1412 shells, has already been provided.
Rheinmetall has reported that it has already delivered more than half of the planned supply volume. The completion of these deliveries is expected by the end of 2026. The new RH1412 shells can be used with various 155mm artillery systems and are noted for their long range and high effectiveness.
The consortium is responding to increasing demand by expanding existing production capacities and constructing new plants. By 2030, Rheinmetall plans to produce approximately 1.5 million artillery shells annually.
The Werk Niedersachsen plant, which opened in August 2025 in Unterlüß, has already become the largest artillery ammunition manufacturing facility in Europe. The site is capable of producing up to 350,000 155mm shells per year. Investments in the project amounted to about €500 million, creating over 500 jobs. A significant portion of the plant’s production is intended specifically for Ukraine.
Experts emphasize that expanding ammunition production is a crucial element in supporting Ukraine’s defense capability, as well as strengthening Rheinmetall’s position in the global market.
