Apple is ready to spend millions of dollars to improve the AI version of Siri by paying funds to publishers — WSJ

Apple is discussing new deals with publishers to update Siri

Apple is negotiating with publishers to secure new multi-year agreements that will allow the use of their content materials to enhance the artificial intelligence features of the voice assistant Siri, reports the Wall Street Journal.

The company aims to provide Siri with access to current information and news, which will require the use of large volumes of content from various publishers. According to the source, Apple is ready to spend millions of dollars on this initiative, but official statements regarding reached agreements with specific publishers have not yet been announced.

These negotiations occur amidst the global discussion on publishers’ rights to compensation for the use of their materials by technology companies. In July 2026, the Danish government joined a legal case in the Court of Justice of the European Union concerning compliance with Article 15 of the EU Directive on the digital single market. This article protects publishers’ right to remuneration if their materials are used by online platforms.

In June 2026, about 400 local and regional newspapers in the US filed a class-action lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, accusing them of unauthorized scanning and use of materials for training their language models. The publishers emphasize that they have invested significant funds in creating content that was used without their consent.
