Meta has suspended Instagram’s feature for creating images using AI
Meta has disabled an Instagram feature that allowed the use of content from public accounts to generate images using artificial intelligence. This happened after criticism from users and experts.
After the launch of the new Meta AI feature, which allowed automatic image creation using content from public Instagram accounts, the company faced a wave of criticism. Users expressed concerns about the lack of prior consent from content owners. Haley McNamara, Vice President of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation in the U.S., warned that this could lead to fraud and sexual extortion using fake images.
Meta initially allowed users to opt out of having their content used through account settings, but this did not satisfy critics. As a result, the company completely disabled this feature, stating that changes have already been made to Muse Image AI’s image creation model. Muse Image is a tool designed for generating and editing images based on textual descriptions, integrated into Meta AI, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
The controversy surrounding the feature highlights the importance of discussing the ethics of using artificial intelligence technologies, especially regarding intellectual property and privacy. A similar issue was recently raised by Google, which started labeling advertisements created using AI.
