Companies restrict the use of artificial intelligence due to rising costs

Companies are increasingly imposing restrictions on the use of artificial intelligence tools, such as ChatGPT, due to the significant costs encountered when actively employed by workers.

Modern artificial intelligence technologies, which simplify the execution of many tasks, are becoming an important tool for businesses, but their widespread use entails significant financial costs. The founder of the American company Pylon, Marty Causey, shared with Business Insider that after expanding his company’s staff to 150 employees, expenses for Anthropic services could triple, reaching $1.4 million. This forced the management to implement limits on the use of AI for certain parts of the staff.

Just a few months ago, companies encouraged employees to actively use artificial intelligence, but the change in policy resulted from concerns about rising costs. For example, Uber was forced to limit AI expenses after the annual budget was exhausted in four months.

According to the AlphaSense platform, the word “tokens” became a frequent topic during company conference calls with investors: in the second quarter of 2026, it was mentioned 129 times compared to 57 times in the previous quarter. Restrictions on the use of AI tools have already been implemented or tested by large companies such as Coinbase and Walmart, while Amazon abandoned the internal ranking of token usage.

According to the Ramp artificial intelligence index, in May 2026, technological and media companies spent an average of $66 on AI per employee compared to $59 a month earlier. In some startups, artificial intelligence already partially replaces the need for new hires, as happened in the company MindFort, where thanks to AI, six employees perform volumes that previously required 20 employees.

An increasing number of candidates in interviews are interested in the possibilities of using AI tools in a new job and the limits of their application. This may indicate the importance of access to the latest technologies for career building.

Pylon Up to $1.4 million total Tripled increase Implemented
Uber Not specified Budget exhausted in 4 months Implemented
Amazon Max. up to $7500 per person Ranking canceled Implemented
