The Vatican has established a commission to regulate artificial intelligence.
Pope Leo XIV has announced the creation of an Interdicasterial Commission for Artificial Intelligence in the Vatican. The task of this new body is to regulate and coordinate projects related to artificial intelligence.
The commission consists of representatives from seven key Vatican structures, including the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, the Dicastery for Culture and Education, and the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. Importantly, one of the institutions will coordinate the commission’s work for a year, with a possible extension at the Pope’s decision. This decision was made in response to the significant development and active implementation of artificial intelligence and its impact on society, raising concerns for the dignity of each individual.
This is not the first time the Vatican has focused on artificial intelligence issues. In January 2025, the document “Antiqua et Nova” was published, examining the relationship between artificial and human intelligence. Additionally, in February 2026, a system for translating the Holy Mass using artificial intelligence was implemented.
Experts note that the creation of such a commission could promote more responsible and ethical use of technology within the Holy See, which is an important step in the context of global technological changes.
