The Pentagon recognized Anthropic as a supply chain threat: what it means for the company.

US Restricts Anthropic from Pentagon Contracts

The US Department of Defense has listed Anthropic as a supplier risk, prohibiting its use in government contracts related to the Pentagon.

From now on, contractors working with the US Department of Defense will not be able to use Anthropic’s technologies, including the Claude AI model. However, this restriction does not apply to other projects unrelated to the Pentagon.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei noted that this decision has a “narrow scope” and assured that the company plans to challenge it in court, as it is considered legally unfounded.

However, during the transitional period, Anthropic’s models can be used for military operations, such as intelligence analysis and cyber operations.

This decision was preceded by a conflict starting from negotiations at the Pentagon on February 23. The Department of Defense demanded full access to the company’s models without exceptions, which Anthropic refused.

Also, in this context, OpenAI recently announced an agreement with the Pentagon, sparking new discussions about the use of AI technology with restrictions on surveillance and the development of autonomous weapon systems.
