The Ukrainian government has concluded the fuel cashback program, which operated from March 20. During this period, nearly 2.3 million drivers took advantage of it.
Introduced in the context of the fuel crisis caused by the war in Iran, the cashback program allowed drivers to receive reimbursements for purchased fuel: 15% on diesel, 10% on gasoline, and 5% on autogas. The maximum compensation amount was 500 hryvnias per month. According to the government, 91% of program participants are owners of budget cars with small engines.
However, the program did not go without criticism. Analytical centers claimed that this initiative effectively subsidizes imported fuel, not providing adequate support to vulnerable households. In addition, it was noted that owners of fuel-intensive cars received more compensation, regardless of income. According to sources, an additional 4 billion hryvnias from the Reserve Fund were planned to be spent on the program.
It is worth mentioning that the initial program duration was planned until May 1, but it was extended until the end of May. According to information from Member of Parliament Yaroslav Zheleznyak, the total expenditure for implementing the initiative cost the state budget 10.5 billion hryvnias, or 20 million per day.
