The European Commission does not comment on the detention of Ukrainians in Hungary, calling the incident “new information”
The European Commission refrains from commenting on the detention of Oshchadbank cash couriers in Hungary, citing the lack of additional information. This issue was raised at a briefing, but EC representatives refused to answer journalists’ questions.
A LIGA.net correspondent asked the European Commission’s spokesperson about the assessment of Hungary’s actions, which detained Ukrainian cash couriers returning from Austria. However, the spokesperson stated that the commission currently has no additional information on this issue. Furthermore, EC representatives said they would not speculate on the possible involvement of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who previously announced conditions for providing aid to Ukraine.
Another journalist inquired about the possibility of the EC mediating to resolve the situation between Kyiv and Budapest. However, the spokesperson repeated that the information is new, and the European Commission needs more time to clarify details. It is known that there are no contacts with the Hungarian side at the moment, as the case is still under review.
Recall that on the night of March 5 to 6, two cash courier service vehicles of Oshchadbank with seven Ukrainian employees were detained in Budapest. Ukrainian diplomats report that Hungary is blocking consular access to the detained citizens, which has raised concerns in Ukraine. This issue is at the center of Ukrainian-Hungarian relations, which have been tense recently due to economic and political disagreements.
