Ex-Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine Arrested for Two Months in Energy Corruption Case
The Higher Anti-Corruption Court has decided to arrest ex-Vice Prime Minister Oleksiy Chernyshov for 60 days due to accusations of corruption in the energy sector.
The court determined that Chernyshov, a former minister of national unity, will remain in custody until January 16, 2025. However, he is provided the option to be released on bail amounting to 51.6 million hryvnias. Should the bail be posted, Chernyshov will have several obligations, including a prohibition on leaving the Kyiv region without permission and the requirement to surrender passports for foreign travel. Simultaneously, the court denied the petition for Chernyshov’s release on surety.
Chernyshov was charged with illegal enrichment on November 11, being named as a figure in a scheme codenamed “Midas,” in which he is known under the pseudonym Che Guevara. Military intelligence and other agencies have expressed interest in his actions, but details of the cooperation remain unknown. Some reports suggest that Chernyshov may have connections to the construction of luxury mansions near Kyiv.
This case is part of a broader context of the fight against corruption in Ukraine’s energy sector, which is critically important to the country’s economy. Experts emphasize that such court cases are an important signal to potential investors and may stimulate transparency in the energy sector.
