OpenAI considers cooperation with NATO after agreement with the Pentagon — Reuters

OpenAI is considering a deal with NATO regarding the implementation of technology in “unclassified” networks

The company OpenAI, known for its advanced developments in artificial intelligence, is in talks with NATO to deploy its technologies in the Alliance’s “unclassified” networks. This information was obtained from sources of Reuters.

During an internal meeting, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, initially suggested the possibility of collaborating with all NATO networks, including classified ones. However, a company representative later clarified that the discussion was solely about “unclassified networks” and that Altman’s words were incorrectly interpreted. NATO has not yet provided an official comment on this information.

This potential agreement follows a previous contract OpenAI made with the Pentagon, signed on February 28th, regarding the deployment of models in the classified networks of the USA. Altman emphasized that the contract includes principles of human oversight over artificial intelligence and the avoidance of mass surveillance on US citizens.

The agreement with the Pentagon sparked mixed reactions, including negative feedback due to potential reputational risks. Nonetheless, the company, backed by technology giants like Microsoft and Amazon, continues to secure contracts with government entities. A possible contract with NATO would be another significant step for OpenAI in expanding its influence on an international level.
