The Verkhovna Rada Approves Payments for Military Personnel Who Returned from Captivity for Medical Treatment
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has passed a law that provides for monthly payments of 50,000 hryvnias to military personnel who have returned from captivity and require inpatient care due to serious illnesses.
This bill, adopted on October 9, guarantees compensation for military personnel who cannot continue their service after captivity due to the need for extensive medical treatment. The payments will continue until a determination of their fitness for service or their discharge is made. The law will take effect the day after its official publication.
The law also stipulates that payments will be suspended in cases of suspicion of crimes against national security or military offenses. If a guilty verdict is rendered, the payments will be canceled.
To implement this law, amendments will be made to existing laws concerning the social and legal protection of military personnel and their families. The adoption of this bill has been called an “act of justice” for military members who survived captivity and returned for treatment.
It is worth recalling that on July 28, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, signed a law for a payout of 15 million hryvnias to the families of military personnel who died in captivity. However, such assistance will not be provided if the military voluntarily surrendered to captivity.
The Ministry of Veterans Affairs has reported that by 2025, the number of combatants in Ukraine will exceed 1.3 million people.
