Iran has chosen a new “supreme leader” amidst threats from Israel.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has announced the election of a new “supreme leader,” however, the process is accompanied by threats from Israel. The IDF stated that it would continue to oppose any successor.
The selection of Iran’s new leader took place at the Assembly of Experts meeting, but the name of the ayatollah has not yet been disclosed. It is likely that the position could be filled by Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the former supreme leader Ali Khamenei, who tragically died during a US-Israeli operation. Opposition sources claim that the process was conducted under pressure from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The situation is complicated by the fact that hereditary succession is not an approved practice within the Shia clerical elite of Iran. Mojtaba lacks significant spiritual authority and does not hold any official position in the state, which further complicates his candidacy.
Meanwhile, Israel continues to threaten strikes on Iran and its leadership. The IDF has already announced its intention to oppose the new leader and his supporters. Military actions between the countries have serious implications for the region, affecting the supply of energy resources and the operation of air defenses.
Analysts warn that the escalation of conflict in the Middle East could have significant economic consequences, particularly for the global oil market and regional security.
