Ukrainian bank “Oschadbank” announced its intention to reclaim assets illegally seized in Hungary during the detention of Ukrainian citizens. The bank demands the return of the cash and gold confiscated by the Hungarian side on March 5.
The incident occurred amid ongoing tensions between Kyiv and the pro-Russian government in Budapest. The state-owned “Oschadbank” reported that it plans to challenge the Hungarian immigration service’s decision to restrict the stay of its cash-in-transit crew in the EU and to present the case at the international level. Additionally, the bank will consult a leading international company for an audit of contractual operations.
Hungary detained the cash-in-transit crew while they were transporting $40 million, 35 million euros, and 9 kg of gold from Austria to Ukraine, accusing them of possible connections with the Ukrainian “military mafia.” “Oschadbank” claims that the funds were being transported under international agreements and customs procedures in cooperation with the Austrian “Raiffeisen.” Following the incident, Hungary released the detained Ukrainians, but the valuables and cash-in-transit vehicles remain under arrest.
Currently, complex political changes are possible in Hungary, as the country is experiencing tensions with Kyiv. Experts note that this issue may become the subject of international legal proceedings and could also impact bilateral relations between the countries.
