iPhone and iPad have been recognized as reliable for handling NATO classified information.

iPhone and iPad have been approved for use with NATO’s classified data

The iPhone and iPad devices are the first consumer gadgets authorized for operation with classified information in restricted environments of NATO countries. This is confirmed by certification approved by Apple.

This certification allows the use of standard devices on platforms iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 for working with “restricted” level data. They are included in the NATO Information Assurance Product Catalogue as meeting the information security requirements of the alliance countries. Experts from Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) conducted technical evaluations, testing, and analysis of the platform’s security mechanisms, confirming compliance with built-in protection.

Previously, iPhone and iPad were already allowed to work with classified data of the German government. The new certification extends the use of these devices to all NATO countries. Claudia Plattner, president of BSI, emphasized the importance of considering information security from the early stages of mobile product development, which is key to a secure digital transformation.

This decision is a significant step towards simplifying information security procedures in military and government structures of NATO. The use of consumer gadgets can reduce costs on specialized equipment and software, increasing operational efficiency.
