Hungary threatens the EU with a lawsuit over the refusal of Russian gas

Hungary prepares to file a lawsuit with the European Court regarding the decision to abandon Russian gas

Hungary intends to challenge the decision to gradually discontinue the import of Russian gas in the European Court, stated Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó. Together with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, they agreed to coordinate actions on this issue.

Péter Szijjártó announced that Hungary plans to appeal to the EU’s highest court to contest the EU decision on the gradual phasing out of Russian gas. In his view, this decision violates the founding documents of the European Union, making it unacceptable for implementation in Hungary.

The minister also noted that he discussed this issue with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. They agreed to coordinate efforts, considering the interests of both countries. Fico, for his part, stated that Slovakia’s decision to file a lawsuit will depend on guarantees from the European Commission to prevent a potential gas shortage and stabilize prices.

Experts point out that the development of the new EU energy policy requires the support of most member states, so Hungary and Slovakia cannot veto this decision. Earlier, the European Union approved the final rules for phasing out the import of Russian natural gas by 2028. Moreover, the United States government has expressed its readiness to swiftly replace Russian energy resources with its own proposals.
