Industrial city Kamyanske struggles for survival amidst environmental challenges
Kamyanske, located between factories and remnants of radioactive waste, faces environmental and social challenges, but is gradually recovering with the arrival of the industrial giant “Metinvest”.
Kamyanske, a city in the Dnipropetrovsk region, is better known for its industrial past and challenging environmental conditions. Local residents have long suffered from factory emissions and the presence of radioactive waste, which affect air quality and people’s health. Most of the population either commutes daily to work in Dnipro or is engaged in local industry or trade. The challenging environmental situation negatively impacts the life expectancy of the male population, which often does not exceed 50 years.
However, recent years have brought changes. With the arrival of “Metinvest”, a well-known metallurgical company, the city has been given an opportunity for economic growth and stability. The industrial giant invests in local infrastructure, creates new jobs, and facilitates environmental improvements through the implementation of “green” technologies.
Since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, around 30,000 displaced persons have arrived in Kamyanske. This has created additional pressure on the city’s infrastructure, but also brought new labor force and economic activity.
Analysts note that the presence of “Metinvest” can significantly change the future of Kamyanske, reducing environmental risks and improving quality of life. However, for long-term success, additional investments in health, education, and infrastructure are necessary.
| Indicator | Before Metinvest’s arrival | After Metinvest’s arrival |
|---|---|---|
| Average life expectancy of men | Less than 50 years | Expected to increase |
| Number of jobs | Shortage | Growth |
| Environmental indicators | Low | Improving |
Despite the challenges, Kamyanske has the potential to become an example for other industrial cities aiming to revive their industrial past in the context of modern environmental requirements.
