Nintendo announces Switch 2 console with a replaceable battery in accordance with EU requirements
Nintendo has announced the release of a new version of its popular Switch 2 console with a replaceable battery, in line with the new European Union regulation.
The company confirmed that the new version of the console will be released to comply with EU requirements, which will mandate all electronics manufacturers to ensure easy replacement of batteries starting February 2027. The aim of this decision is to make devices more environmentally friendly and user-friendly.
Current Nintendo models with the prefix “BEE” will receive new identifiers, and future versions meeting the new standards will have unique numbers and an additional “OSM” mark on the packaging. This will help distinguish them for regulatory purposes.
The Nintendo Switch console, which debuted in March 2017, has already earned the title of the company’s best-selling product. It surpassed the previous record of the Nintendo DS, with total sales of 155.37 million units. The Nintendo DS held the lead with 154.02 million units sold, while the Gameboy, with 118.69 million, remained in third place.
The new rules adopted by the EU are designed to reduce waste and promote the longevity of electronic products. This decision may impact other brands, forcing them to adapt to new requirements and redesign their devices.
Experts believe this move could drive increased competition in the portable console market, as manufacturers seek new solutions to enhance the convenience of their products.
