Artificial Intelligence in Education: How It Transforms the Educational System

Artificial Intelligence in Education: Opportunities and Challenges

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is actively being integrated into the educational process, offering methods for adaptive learning and reducing the workload on teachers. Despite numerous advantages, the quality usage of AI raises concerns about potential negative consequences for students’ critical thinking.

Back in the 1950s, startups with intelligent learning systems attempted to implement AI, but it only became financially viable in the 2010s. Nowadays, technologies like ChatGPT are widespread globally. They assist in the personalization of learning, and some countries, such as South Korea and the United Arab Emirates, are already actively implementing these technologies to address educational inequality and enhance literacy.

However, as AI capabilities expand, new challenges arise. Experts warn about the risks of overusing language models like ChatGPT, which can negatively affect students’ ability to think independently and complete tasks. This may lead to cognitive atrophy and a decrease in creativity, as some studies suggest.

In Ukraine, the integration of AI into the educational process is also gaining momentum. According to a survey by Projector Creative & Tech Institute, most Ukrainian teachers and students are already using AI to prepare lessons and complete assignments. In 2024, the Ministry of Education, together with the Ministry of Digital Transformation, will publish guidelines for the responsible use of AI in schools.

Country Use of AI in Education
South Korea AI textbooks for personalized learning
UAE AI tutors for enhancing academic performance
Brazil Letrus program for improving literacy levels

Developments such as the Kyiv IT Cluster project, supported by NVIDIA, are also aimed at enhancing the capabilities of Ukrainian students in this field by providing free educational programs in Generative AI and large language models.
