OpenAI and AMD Announce Multi-Billion Dollar Chip Manufacturing Deal
OpenAI has confirmed signing a deal with AMD aimed at ensuring chip manufacturing for artificial intelligence. The agreement is expected to bring AMD tens of billions of dollars in revenue and help OpenAI accelerate its infrastructure development.
According to information from The Financial Times, OpenAI will purchase processors from AMD with a total power consumption of 6 gigawatts, equivalent to the average electricity demand of Singapore. The companies have not disclosed the full amount of the deal, but OpenAI estimates that commissioning 1 GW of power could cost around $50 billion, two-thirds of which will be spent on chips and supporting infrastructure.
The main goal of the agreement is to accelerate the construction of new data processing centers for training OpenAI’s artificial intelligence models. Following the announcement of the deal, AMD’s stock rose in after-hours trading.
Part of the agreement is OpenAI’s commitment to purchase AMD’s future MI450 chip, which is expected to compete with Nvidia’s products, with its release planned for the second half of 2026.
Recently, OpenAI has also signed other large-scale agreements with technology giants. Notably, Nvidia has invested $100 billion in collaboration with OpenAI, and agreements with Oracle and SoftBank involve using 23 GW of new capacities, with the cost exceeding $1 trillion.
