Cherny notes that for successful project implementation, teams need a combination of different roles, depending on the product development stage. He highlights such archetypes: “Prototyper,” “Builder,” “Sweeper/Optimizer,” “Grower,” and “Maintainer.” These roles define the direction and effectiveness of the team working on different stages of the product lifecycle.

According to Cherny, at the initial stages when the product is still searching for its success formula, a combination of roles “Prototyper + Builder + Sweeper” is necessary. When the product is adapted to the market, it’s crucial to have specialists “Builder + Sweeper + Grower” and a bit of “Maintainer.” For companies that are already established in the market, the optimal combination is “Sweeper + Grower + Maintainer and a bit of Builder.”

This model of team organization is developed in the context of Anthropic’s activities, a company specializing in artificial intelligence. Founded in 2021 by former OpenAI researchers, Anthropic has already achieved significant success in its field. Among the company’s leading products is the chatbot Claude, now available on the world’s three largest cloud platforms: Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure.
