The Collapse of the Illusion of “Greatness”: In a “Multipolar World,” Russia Turned into “Anything” for China

Four years after the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia has failed to achieve its ambitions of creating a new world order. The planned “swift and vigorous” campaign turned into a series of complications for the Kremlin.

In 2019, Russian President Vladimir Putin began aggressive actions in Ukraine with the hope of quickly capturing the neighboring country. This move was supposed to consolidate Russia’s position on the world stage and be a catalyst for the transition from a unipolar to a multipolar world, where Russia would become one of the key states. However, instead of the planned success, the conflict dragged on, challenging international sanctions and threatening the harmony within the Russian government itself.

Experts note that the calculation for a quick victory did not account for Ukraine’s determination and the international support it was able to mobilize. Even with influential international connections, the Kremlin faces isolation and economic challenges that have created new barriers to its ambitions.

Continuous support from allies has allowed Ukraine not only to withstand but also to harden in a protracted confrontation. At the same time, Western countries are strengthening their defense spending and increasing sanction pressure on Russia, forcing the latter to rethink its actions and strategic aspirations.

Indicator Kremlin’s Expectations Reality
