The Evolution of Electronic Warfare: The Role of EW Technologies in Modern Conflicts
Electronic warfare (EW) has become a key element on the battlefield, providing protection against unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and disrupting enemy communication and navigation systems. This factor significantly influences the success of military operations.
EW uses a complex of technical means to detect, protect, or disrupt the enemy’s electronic systems. This particularly applies to drones that operate based on radio communication and satellite navigation. As Yaroslav Filimonov, CEO of Kvertus, noted, these UAVs are a primary target for EW systems because their operation heavily depends on control channels, video transmission, satellite navigation, and telemetry. EW tools create interference affecting these channels, which can lead to a loss of control over the drone.
There are two main approaches to jamming signals: traditional white noise, which creates radio interference over a wide frequency range, and smart-EW, which analyzes and specifically jams particular signals. Kvertus, a company specializing in the development of smart-EW systems, emphasizes the importance of using intelligent systems for instant signal analysis in the air. This allows for faster identification of anomalies and response to frequency changes rapidly made by the opponent.
One of the new technologies already being used on the front is GPS spoofing—a technique where the drone receives false coordinates, forcing it to change its planned route or make an emergency landing.
Therefore, EW is becoming increasingly integrated into military strategies, requiring constant technological advancement. Ukrainian companies like Kvertus, Unwave, and InLab are actively developing these systems, making a significant contribution to modern warfare methods.
Technological progress in the field of EW demonstrates its substantial significance for modern military operations, where electronic systems play a decisive role. Despite the challenges, Ukraine continues to build up capability in this area, enhancing the effectiveness of defense and self-defense capabilities.
