Ukraine Concentrates Electricity Production on Domestic Consumption
Ukrainian power plants operate solely to meet domestic needs, the Ministry of Energy reports. Electricity exports outside the country are currently not carried out.
Due to massive missile and drone attacks that damaged major thermal and hydroelectric power plants, the Ukrainian energy system is focused exclusively on meeting domestic demand. The Ministry of Energy emphasized that all available capacities work only to cover the needs of Ukrainian consumers.
Ukraine is part of the European power grid, connecting it with the energy systems of other countries, such as Moldova, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland. This leads to natural technical energy flows between countries. The Ministry stressed that these flows should not be confused with commercial exports, as the balance usually remains close to zero.
The context for these events was information from the IAEA about the loss of connection of Ukrainian nuclear power plants to one of the power transmission lines as a result of a Russian strike. This resulted in the reduction of several nuclear reactors’ capacity. Despite this, the duration of power outages in Kyiv was reduced, indicating a stabilization of the supply situation in limited conditions.
