Trump on the peace plan for Ukraine: “I think we are very close to reaching a deal.”

US President Donald Trump announced progress in negotiating a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine. His comments came during the Thanksgiving turkey pardoning ceremony at the White House garden.

Trump emphasized that reaching a peace agreement is a challenging task but expressed optimism that it would soon be possible. “We are very close to a deal… I think we are making progress,” the US president noted. He also highlighted human losses in October 2023, noting that 25,000 Ukrainian and Russian soldiers died as a result of the war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his wish through the head of the Office, Andriy Yermak, to meet with Trump on Thanksgiving to finalize the peace plan discussions. Yermak noted that such a meeting during the holiday season could have symbolic significance for both parties.

On November 24, the chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk, presented Ukraine’s “red lines” in peace negotiations, and Andriy Yermak confirmed that the current draft peace plan takes into account Ukraine’s interests. The next day, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that Europe would work to support the American plan without developing an alternative.

Analysts note that successfully reaching a peace agreement could stabilize the region and reduce human and economic losses. However, concerns remain about the adherence to the agreement’s terms by all parties.
