The Swedish Coast Guard conducted an operation to board the ship Hui Yuan, which was en route from Russia to Spain, due to suspicions of violating environmental legislation.
During patrol on April 11, Swedish law enforcement officers discovered that the bulk carrier, transporting bulk goods under the Panamanian flag, was dumping coal residues into the sea. This violates the Swedish Environmental Code. The operation took place near the town of Ystad in the south of the country, where officials boarded the ship on the morning of April 12.
A preliminary investigation has been initiated, and the prosecution has decided to hold a judicial hearing to clarify the details of the incident. Hui Yuan was headed to Las Palmas, the capital of the Canary Islands, which belong to Spain. This is not the first instance when Sweden has stopped Russian vessels: at the beginning of April, a tanker was detained for an oil spill.
The detention of the ship became another episode in a broader campaign against Russia’s “shadow fleet,” which allows circumventing international sanctions. Amidst this, an initiative is being considered in the United Kingdom to turn confiscated “shadow” oil into a source of funding for Ukraine’s defense.
