Apple faced technical challenges in updating the Siri voice assistant, which may delay the launch of new features until September. The detected bugs forced the company to alter the release schedule, shifting the launch of new capabilities from March to a later date.
During the testing of the new Siri architecture, known by the code name Linwood, Apple developers discovered serious flaws. According to Bloomberg, the assistant takes a long time to process requests, incorrectly interprets commands, and provides inaccurate data. There are also issues with interruptions in user speech and accidental switching to ChatGPT when Siri was supposed to operate independently.
The function of working with personal data, which allows Siri to analyze context, was particularly affected. The launch of App Intents, which enables voice control of third-party applications, is also delayed.
Despite the difficulties, Apple is preparing major updates for iOS 27, including transforming Siri into a full-fledged chatbot based on the Google Gemini model. In addition, a launch of its own search engine is planned, providing synthesized answers with links to sources.
Craig Federighi, Apple’s Vice President of Software Engineering, noted that the delays are related to the company’s stance on preserving user privacy. Apple strives to process as much data as possible locally on the device or through secure servers, avoiding the use of data for training models.
