Significance of UAVs on the Frontline: Key Points from the Interview with Ratel Founder Taras Ostapchuk

Ground Robotic Complexes Ratel: From Frontline Experience to Innovative Solutions

Ground robotic complexes by the company Ratel, founded by Taras Ostapchuk, who gained experience on the front line, have become an important part of Ukraine’s modern defense system and have attracted interest from European investors.

In the podcast “FORWARD with Valeriya Ionan,” Taras Ostapchuk spoke about the journey of Ratel and the significance of ground robotic complexes in wartime conditions. Facing difficulties while serving as a reconnaissance drone pilot, he realized the need for modern technology on the battlefield. In 2023, Ostapchuk founded Ratel, which quickly became a leading manufacturer of ground robotic complexes in Ukraine.

Currently, Ratel offers three main models: Ratel S for remote mining, the logistic Ratel M, and the large Ratel H for evacuation. These complexes have already begun changing the approaches to military operations, particularly in the Bakhmut direction, reducing the risk to soldiers’ lives during territorial mining. By 2025, the company significantly expanded production, manufacturing over a thousand units and actively training military personnel on the frontline.

According to Ostapchuk, the Ukrainian market for ground robotic complexes for defense needs accounts for up to 35,000 units per year, with potential growth due to the dual-use nature of this technology. The application of Ratel’s technology in civilian life is also a focus for the company, with potential uses being explored in firefighting and agriculture.

Year Number of Units Produced Number of Investors Attracted
2023 25 10
2024 200 15
2025 1000+ 20+
Plan 2026 3000+ 25+

The Ukrainian innovative defense technology industry is in the stage of active development, and Ratel is a vivid example of how wartime experience can equip a country with new opportunities for economic growth and the export of innovative solutions worldwide.
