Ukrainian military successfully uses long-range drones to supply the front, thanks to access to satellite control and innovations by Ukrainian engineers.
Unit “Orion”, part of the assault guard “Vengeance”, started testing drone control through satellite internet in Kharkiv region. This ensured safer remote control and reduced risks for operators.
The decision for remote drone control was found in the fall of 2025. Thanks to satellite communication, such drones as Vampire from SkyFall can deliver cargo across the Oskil River, overcoming obstacles and reducing risks for personnel.
Drones are equipped with modules that ensure communication through a satellite connection. An operator, hundreds of kilometers away from the front, gets the opportunity to coordinate the drone’s flight. According to a coordinator participant with the pseudonym “Glamour,” stable internet, especially the connection through Starlink, plays a key role in the operation.
The technology allows for logistical missions under intense enemy activity. It’s important to note that unlike traditional radio communication, satellite control doesn’t create mutual interference when used simultaneously by several drones.
The cost of equipping one drone with special modules is approximately 35,000 UAH. Despite the expenses, the demand for such technologies is growing. Currently, “Orion” plans to expand this experience to other types of drones and improve management for reconnaissance operations.
The experience of remote control has already yielded positive results. Ukrainian company SkyFall is testing similar solutions for its other drones, including Vampire bombers, P1-SUN interceptors, and FPV-drones Shrike. Additionally, engineers from “Wild Hornets” and the unit “Mace” successfully use technologies for interception, setting new world records for management distance.
| Indicator | Cost, UAH |
