Oil prices are rising due to threats in the Strait of Hormuz area.

Iran considers restrictions for ships through the Strait of Hormuz, oil prices rise.

The Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway for global energy supplies, may become subject to new restrictions from Iran for ships from countries Tehran considers “hostile.” This news has caused an increase in oil prices, supporting overall market uncertainty.

Iranian media report that a parliamentary committee is considering a bill that could ban American and Israeli ships from passing through the strait. Violating the new regime could result in fines of up to 20% of the cargo’s value. There is also a possibility of charging a passage fee of 5-7% of the cargo’s value. Currently, Oman charges about 3%, but the US protests against any increase in fees.

The market’s reaction to these news was immediate. Brent oil prices rose by 80 cents to $83.29 a barrel, and WTI by 64 cents to $77.93. On the previous day, major oil benchmarks showed a more significant increase of over $3 a barrel following news from Iran.

Investors and markets are currently concerned about the possibility of further strengthening of the strait control regime, which maintains tensions between Iran and the United States. Rystad Energy Vice President Lin Ye notes that the market reaction is driven not so much by news of the deal’s failure as by fears of continued restrictions in the straits even after a potential deal is reached.

Analysts also point out the difficulties in implementing a potential deal between Iran and Oman, particularly due to US sanctions and limited insurance coverage for payments. Vanda Insights founder Vandana Hari emphasizes that the lack of clarity in deal terms causes significant fluctuations in investor sentiment.

Although oil prices have increased, both major oil benchmarks are showing an overall weekly decline of about 8%. US President Donald Trump expressed hope that the conflict between Iran and the US could be resolved in the near future.

Oil Type Price at the Time of Publication ($/barrel) Change (%)
