Germany promises long-range weapons to Ukraine but avoids specifics on Taurus missiles
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has promised to equip the Ukrainian army with long-range weapon systems, but did not provide a clear answer regarding the potential supply of Taurus missiles.
At a press conference with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Merz was asked about supplying Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine. The chancellor avoided a direct answer but noted that Germany is working intensively with the Ukrainian government on projects related to long-range weaponry. “The Ukrainian army will be equipped with such weapon systems,” he emphasized.
Merz added that there should remain some uncertainty for Russia regarding the amount of military aid Germany is providing to Ukraine. He stressed that Germany aims to increase the number of long-range weapon systems available to the Ukrainian army, if necessary, in the coming weeks and months.
At the end of April, Merz expressed readiness to transfer the Taurus to Ukraine in coordination with allies. In May, government spokesman Stefan Cornelius noted that should the transfer of these missiles be approved, the decision would be classified.
