Ukrainian Journalist Viktoria Roshchyna Posthumously Recognized as a “Press Freedom Hero”
The International Press Institute (IPI) awarded the title of “Press Freedom Hero” to Viktoria Roshchyna, who died while in Russian captivity. Six other journalists from various countries were also honored with this award.
The “Press Freedom Hero” award is given to journalists for “exceptional courage and resilience in the fight for media freedom.” Two recipients, including Viktoria Roshchyna from Ukraine, received the award posthumously. The other journalists are from Georgia, the USA, Hong Kong, Peru, Palestine, and Ethiopia. The organization noted that many of the laureates faced imprisonment, repression, and threats but continued their work.
Among the awardees are journalists who are currently imprisoned due to repression for their professional activities. The organization emphasized the importance of strengthening the protection of media workers operating in conflict zones.
Viktoria Roshchyna went missing in August 2023 in a temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine. She was taken captive by Russians. In October, it was reported that she died in a Russian detention facility. The journalist was buried with numerous signs of torture, prompting an investigation into her death.
