In Ukraine, there are more than 2,000 defense companies: how artificial intelligence is changing the Defense Tech sector.

Ukraine expands military technology sector capabilities through artificial intelligence

The Ukrainian defense industry is on a transformation path by engaging artificial intelligence, which allows significantly improving combat effectiveness and enhancing operational autonomy. This initiative has received support from the new Defense AI Center “A1,” established with the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.

The head of the center, Danylo Tsvok, told the Associated Press that Ukraine is already implementing innovative solutions such as swarm drone coordination systems to ease the work of operators. Artificial intelligence contributes to the automation of phases in the “kill chain” from detection to target engagement, which could evolve into a unified network platform in the next three to five years.

According to submitted forecasts, in the near future, the Ukrainian army plans to expand the use of autonomous interceptor drones, ground robotic systems, and enhance electronic warfare. Some of these technologies are already actively used, notably unmanned platforms that improve logistics and perform evacuation tasks.

The Defense AI Center “A1,” whose primary goal is to implement artificial intelligence in the military sphere, is created with the support of the UK government. Headed by Danylo Tsvok, along with technical director Dmytro Ovcharenko, the center focuses on combat data analysis, predicting enemy actions, and the development of autonomous systems.

The center is part of a large-scale initiative aimed at creating several centers of competence within the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, specializing in key areas of modern warfare such as drones and artillery.

Key Directions of Defense AI Center “A1” Tasks
Combat data analysis Improving tactical reaction to combat actions
Predicting enemy actions Developing counteraction strategies
Development of autonomous systems Automation of military tasks
Creation of new management tools Effective management of combat operations
