Global electricity demand will increase by a third – report

By 2035, renewable sources will provide 55% of global energy consumption

Global electricity consumption will increase by almost a third by 2035, with renewable sources such as solar power providing 55% of global electricity production. This is according to research by Rystad Energy, Bloomberg reports.

The rise in electricity demand is due to the spread of electric vehicles, the development of data centers, and the need for heating and cooling of buildings. Industrial sectors, including steel and iron production, which have already doubled their electricity consumption over the past two decades, remain major drivers of growth. Meanwhile, China and the USA traditionally concentrate the largest consumption, accounting for almost half of global demand.

According to the forecast, China will account for about a fifth of the total growth, while India will show the fastest growth rates — its electricity consumption will more than double.

In the first half of 2025, the volumes of energy produced by wind and solar already exceeded the figures obtained from coal burning. This indicates significant changes in the planet’s energy balance, which can significantly impact the energy resource market and countries’ environmental policies.

Country Percentage of global demand Growth by 2035
USA 25% Stable
China 24% 20% of total growth
India 6% Doubling of consumption
