The United Kingdom has announced the Atlantic Bastion underwater infrastructure protection program.
The UK Ministry of Defence has launched a new defense program called Atlantic Bastion, aimed at protecting critical underwater infrastructure in the North Atlantic. The initiative was developed in response to the growing Russian threat.
The Atlantic Bastion program involves a large-scale transformation of the Royal Navy by integrating the latest technologies with traditional warships and aviation. Key elements include autonomous systems for patrolling, artificial intelligence for data processing, and a digital network for rapid decision-making. First Sea Lord Sir Gwyn Jenkins emphasized the creation of an “underwater network from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge to the Norwegian Sea.” The initiative is linked to increased activity by the Russian fleet, particularly with the operations of the reconnaissance ship “Yantar” near British waters.
In the implementation of the program, the United Kingdom is focusing on partnership with the private sector. The government has already allocated £14 million in initial investments, and private companies, including Anduril UK, BAE Systems, and Helsing, are investing additionally on a 4:1 basis. The first systems are planned to be deployed in the water next year.
