A Ukrainian athlete was reprimanded for wearing anti-war earrings at the Paralympics.

Ukrainian biathlete Oleksandra Kononova received a warning from the International Paralympic Committee for earrings with the inscription “Stop War” during the competitions at the 2026 Paralympics.

During the 2026 Winter Paralympic Games, Oleksandra Kononova received her second personal award, earning a “bronze” in the individual race, but faced a warning for using earrings with the inscription “Stop War.” According to the athlete, the organizers explained the ban by the rules prohibiting such inscriptions during competitions.

The athlete stated that she was ready for a potential warning but emphasized that patriotic accessories, uniforms, and symbolism are very important to her. Kononova explained that it is part of her state of mind and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent her country.

The background shows that similar incidents have occurred with other Ukrainian athletes before. In particular, in February 2026, Olympian Vladyslav Heraskevych was prohibited from using a helmet with the names of deceased Ukrainians and was only allowed a black armband, leading to his disqualification before the first skeleton race.

The situation surrounding Ukrainian athletes once again draws attention to the political context of the games and raises questions about the prohibition of political statements in sports arenas.
