A former British police officer was stripped of citizenship due to ties with Russia.

Mark Bullen, a former British police officer, became the first UK citizen to be stripped of citizenship on national security grounds due to ties to Russia. His passport was revoked by the Home Office amid growing threats related to geopolitical tensions.

The 45-year-old Bullen worked for ten years with the Hertfordshire County Police but was detained in 2024 at Luton Airport after arriving from Russia, where he has lived for the past 12 years. During the investigation, his electronic devices were seized, but no formal charges were made. In the UK, he was scrutinized under anti-terrorism legislation.

In 2022, Bullen obtained a Russian passport, stating that it was a “lifelong dream.” He married a Russian woman and works at “Zenit,” a football club owned by “Gazprom.” In October 2025, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood revoked his British citizenship, citing the need to protect the country from individuals who could threaten security.

This case becomes significant against the backdrop of Russia’s war against Ukraine, where national security issues gain special importance. In the UK, revocation of citizenship is applied in exceptional situations involving ties to terrorism or activities benefiting other states. According to recent data, Europe is tightening control over potential threats from Russia, highlighting the relevance of Bullen’s case.
