The suspension of the head of the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, Oleksandr Klymenko, may become a key factor in changing the course of anti-corruption cases, a source in the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) said.
According to sources in NABU, Klymenko’s role in leading cases against high-ranking officials and suspects in large-scale corruption is “determining.” According to the Criminal Procedure Code, only he can announce suspicion to certain subjects, the interlocutor notes. In the event of his suspension, the Prosecutor General may perform this function.
Experts emphasize that Klymenko’s suspension may lead to a change in the group of prosecutors in certain proceedings, which threatens control over these cases. It also provides an opportunity to appoint “more controllable” persons to these positions, which may change the nature of investigations.
The threat of serving a suspicion to Klymenko became relevant after a notification from international partners during the operation “Midas.” Earlier, the Security Service of Ukraine stated that it does not plan to take measures regarding the announcement of suspicion. Representatives of the European Commission warned that if decisive measures are not taken, it may slow down Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
