Ukraine and Russia Resume Prisoner Exchange Process

Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, Rustem Umerov, announced an agreement with Russia regarding the release of more than 1000 Ukrainian prisoners based on the Istanbul agreements. The corresponding consultations were facilitated by Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.

According to Rustem Umerov, during recent negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, the parties agreed on activating the Istanbul agreements, which provide for the release of 1200 Ukrainian prisoners. Umerov noted that technical consultations to coordinate procedures will be held soon to ensure the return of the prisoners by the end of the year. This is of particular importance, as it is crucial for Ukrainians to spend the New Year and Christmas holidays with their families after a difficult period of captivity.

The last prisoner exchange took place on October 2, when 205 Ukrainian military personnel and civilians were returned from Russian captivity. Additionally, on October 23, Ukraine received 1000 bodies of deceased defenders, highlighting the depth of the tragedy for both countries.

Experts emphasize the significance of these efforts in the context of the humanitarian aspect of the conflict. The resumption and successful completion of exchanges can help ease tensions and also strengthen Ukraine’s position on the international stage as a country that cares for its citizens even in the most challenging conditions.
