Ukraine seeks to verify the conditions of detention of Ukrainian Serhiy Kuznietsov in an Italian prison
The Commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets has reached out to his Italian colleagues to ensure the rights of Serhiy Kuznietsov, detained on suspicion of involvement in the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines, are upheld.
Lubinets notes that it has been reported by the lawyer about inappropriate conditions of Kuznietsov’s detention in a high-security prison in Italy. The lack of dietary meals, information support, and restricted contacts with family are violations that contradict the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, the ombudsman believes.
He emphasized that the recent decision of a Polish court, which acquitted another Ukrainian in similar circumstances, demonstrates shortcomings in the evidence base in such cases, which should be considered by the courts of other EU countries.
Representatives of the Ukrainian ombudsman’s office plan to check Kuznietsov’s living conditions and health on November 5, providing necessary support in the process. Let us recall that Serhiy Kuznietsov was detained in August near Rimini under a European arrest warrant. The Italian Court of Appeal approved his extradition to Germany, but the lawyer filed a new appeal to the Supreme Court of Cassation after it became known that Kuznietsov had announced a hunger strike.
