Y Combinator opens up new opportunities for Ukrainian Defense Tech startups
Y Combinator has announced its support for Ukrainian startups in the Defense Tech sector, allowing founders from Ukraine to participate in the program remotely due to martial law.
The well-known startup accelerator Y Combinator has decided to support Ukrainian startups specializing in defense technologies by allowing them to participate in its winter 2026 program remotely. This decision was a response to the appeal of Ukrainian entrepreneur Oleh Kotsura, which he published on the social network X. According to the accelerator’s partner Jared Friedman, Ukrainian founders can now join the training program without leaving the country.
The Y Combinator winter program will run from January to March 2026 and includes $500,000 in investments, which will be provided before the start of the training. A mandatory condition for participation is the registration of a legal entity in the state of Delaware. Entrepreneurs should submit their applications by November 10. After the selection process, startups will be invited for interviews in video conference format in November or December, and the decision on participation will be announced on the day of the interview.
Despite Y Combinator’s previous lack of involvement with defense projects, the accelerator is now actively expanding its activities in this field. Since its founding, Y Combinator has invested in over 5,000 young companies, including such well-known giants as Airbnb, Dropbox, and Coinbase. Among the accelerator’s alumni, there are already startups with Ukrainian founders, such as Awesomic, AiSDR, and Petcube.
This move could become a major driver of the technology sector’s development in Ukraine, especially in light of modern challenges, and provide new opportunities for innovative solutions in the field of national security.
