OpenAI to Allow Adult Content Viewing in ChatGPT from December
Starting in December, OpenAI is introducing a new feature on the ChatGPT platform that will allow users to view adult content after verifying their age. This decision aims to provide users with greater freedom and enhance the usefulness of the chatbot.
According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, the update is part of an approach to “treat adults like adults.” Previously, ChatGPT was limited in content to avoid risks related to mental health, but the platform has now optimized safety mechanisms to reduce these restrictions without compromising user safety.
This move follows previous changes in the platform’s operation. In September, OpenAI launched a special version of ChatGPT for younger users, which blocks access to explicit and sexual content. This decision came after a tragic incident of a teenager’s suicide in the USA, where ChatGPT was reportedly involved negatively.
To verify users’ ages, OpenAI uses the third-party service Yoti. During this process, users are offered several identification options, including a selfie, uploading a government ID, or using the Yoti app.
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Adult Content | Accessible only after age verification |
| Age Verification | Uses third-party service Yoti |
| Identification Options | Selfie, government ID, Yoti app |
Experts note that opening access to adult content could increase ChatGPT’s popularity among its target audience while also raising the company’s responsibility to adhere to ethical standards.
