Norway will provide Ukraine with €268 million for the purchase of Patriot missiles for air defense
The Norwegian government has announced the allocation of €268 million to enhance Ukraine’s air defense, specifically for the purchase of missiles for the Patriot systems.
This step is part of a broader initiative where Norway, together with Denmark, Germany, and Canada, plans to purchase new missiles directly from the manufacturer in the USA. To expedite deliveries, the Norwegian government is also considering purchasing missiles from countries that already have them in service. In addition to missile financing, Norway will continue to support the PURL program.
Furthermore, Ukraine has addressed European partners with an initiative to develop a ballistic missile defense system, for which Norway has earmarked potential funding. This step is in response to recent massive attacks by Russia, particularly on Kyiv, during which the Ukrainian air defense failed to shoot down any ballistic missiles due to a lack of interceptor missiles. During the night attack on July 6, 419 aerial targets were launched, of which 37 missiles and 326 drones were shot down.
The importance of strengthening Ukraine’s air defense system is becoming increasingly apparent in light of Russian attacks. New funding and international cooperation can significantly enhance Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
