The US FBI created an artificial city for cybersecurity training
The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation has unveiled the unique Kinetic Cyber Range training facility, which allows for the simulation of cyberattacks on critical infrastructure in controlled conditions. Located in Huntsville, Alabama, this project provides a safe environment for training and research.
The Kinetic Cyber Range training facility was officially opened back in 2025, but only now has the FBI publicly demonstrated its capabilities for the first time. This training platform spans over two thousand square meters and includes simulations of houses, hospitals, energy companies, hotels, gas stations, and a data center. To ensure realism, all objects are equipped with actual networks and digital systems.
A distinctive feature of the complex is its isolation from the outside world, allowing for safe experimentation with cybercrimes, analysis of their consequences, and development of protection methods without risking impact on real networks and services. The complex also operates a data center with over 200 servers, where cyber incident simulations, such as hacks and malware system infections, can be conducted.
The Kinetic Cyber Range project is part of broader US efforts to enhance cybersecurity and prepare analysts, agents, and digital forensics specialists for modern challenges in cyberspace. In this way, the FBI hopes to improve the country’s ability to detect and neutralize threats to national security.
