Ukraine and Sweden are considering the possibility of concluding agreements on the supply of Gripen aircraft.

Ukraine and Sweden are approaching contracts for Gripen aircraft supply

The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine announced the possibility of concluding contracts with Sweden for the supply of Gripen fighters, which could significantly bolster Ukraine’s air defense.

During a visit to Sweden, Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov discussed with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and Defense Minister Paul Jonson the prospects of aircraft supply and joint projects in defense. One of the key aspects of the negotiations was strengthening defense capabilities, particularly through potential Gripen aircraft supplies and support for the Czech initiative for long-range ammunition procurement.

Other discussed areas include developing cooperation within the Electronic Warfare Coalition and expanding medium-range strike capabilities. The Ukrainian side also proposed launching the joint BRAVE SWEDEN project to support defense startups and share expertise.

Fedorov’s meeting with representatives of the Swedish defense concern Saab and the company Ovzon may indicate expanding cooperation in the field of research and innovation projects.

The Gripen supply contract could have a significant impact on Ukraine’s defense capability amidst modern threats. Given the urgency of ensuring security, these agreements could be a crucial step in implementing Ukraine’s defense strategy.

Other countries are also actively participating in strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities. For instance, Norway previously announced allocating approximately $300 million through the PURL mechanism for the procurement of air defense systems, drones, and ammunition.
