Germany seeks to quickly unlock €90 billion for Ukraine after Orban’s defeat.

Germany hopes for the prompt formation of a new government in Hungary to unblock aid to Ukraine.

The German government is working to swiftly unblock €90 billion for Ukraine following the defeat of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in the elections. This was reported by the Reuters agency citing a statement from a German government representative.

In Berlin, they emphasize that the provision of aid could happen “very quickly” if the new Hungarian government adopts a constructive position. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated during a briefing on April 13 that cooperation with the new Hungarian government on the Ukrainian issue will gain momentum.

It should be recalled that this concerns a European Union loan which was previously blocked due to the position of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. He opposed granting €90 billion to Ukraine due to disputes surrounding the war-damaged “Druzhba” oil pipeline.

Following the victory of the opposition party “Tisza” led by Peter Magyar, the EU hopes for a change in Hungary’s approach and the quick approval of financial aid to Ukraine. The leader of the “Tisza” party has already received congratulations on the election victory from Viktor Orban.

Previously, on March 19, at an EU summit in Brussels, Hungary blocked the provision of this sum to Ukraine, citing the suspension of Russian oil transit as the reason. However, after the change in government, relations between Hungary and the EU may improve.
