Hungarian elections: Viktor Orban’s support from Robert Fico before the decisive day
On the eve of parliamentary elections in Hungary, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico expressed support for his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban, which could influence political arrangements in the region.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico expressed support for Viktor Orban ahead of elections in Hungary. Orban’s current government, which has been in office for 16 years, risks losing power in light of the upcoming elections. Fico described Orban as a “determined defender of sovereignty and national interests,” emphasizing his significant political experience.
The stance of the Slovak prime minister may further complicate relations between Bratislava, Budapest, and Kyiv, as the governments of Hungary and Slovakia have tense relations with Ukraine. This is particularly related to the conflict surrounding the “Druzhba” oil pipeline, through which both countries received Russian oil. Currently, this transit channel is not operational, causing accusations from Fico and Orban of Kyiv’s political motivation.
Budapest and Bratislava also blocked the implementation of a new sanctions package against Russia and the allocation of a significant EU loan amounting to 90 billion euros for Ukraine. If these elections result in a defeat for Orban, experts consider it possible for the new government to review these decisions.
Viktor Orban also received support from former US President Donald Trump, who promised economic aid if Orban retained his post. On the eve of the elections in Hungary, a large-scale concert was also held, with dozens of performers calling for changes in power.
