Artificial Intelligence as an Amplifier: How the Public Sector Can Win the Battle for Resources – Column

Artificial intelligence transforms the public sector in times of war and resource scarcity

Artificial intelligence is becoming an essential tool for public organizations enduring significant pressure amid war and limited resources. The integration of AI helps optimize operations and enhance efficiency.

In today’s world, where resources in the public sector have long been limited, war creates new challenges that organizations have to address. Nina Levchuk, the co-founder of Impact Force and Sales Director at EMEA Google, emphasizes in her column for AIN that artificial intelligence has ceased to be a trendy novelty and has become a survival tool and an instrument to enhance impact.

Analytical reports show that 82% of nonprofit organizations in the US already use AI tools in their activities. Estimates suggest that generative AI could annually create additional value of between 182 to 308 billion dollars for the social economy.

The implementation of AI allows public organizations to automate routine tasks and save an average of 2.5 hours per day per employee, according to research from Hubspot. Moreover, innovative approaches demonstrate 3-5 times better operational efficiency.

AI promotes inclusion by removing barriers for people who were previously excluded due to linguistic or physical limitations. For example, the Swiss project Spring ACT developed the chatbot SOPHIA, which provides support to victims of domestic violence in over 20 languages.

However, new technologies also bring new challenges. Only 30% of charitable foundations have formalized AI policies, and 9% have dedicated ethical structures. The public sector must adhere to the principles of transparency and ethics to avoid risks.

For effective AI integration, organizations should analyze where resources are spent, develop AI literacy among teams, and establish ethical frameworks for working with data. Such steps will help use AI as a multiplier of human ability, giving more time for strategic tasks.
