Financial difficulties may lead to the cessation of assistance to women in Ukraine, women’s organizations under the auspices of the UN warn. Without the necessary funding, support for 63,000 women and girls may be at risk.
Since the beginning of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, more than 5,000 women and girls have died, and over 14,000 have been injured, reports the United Nations in its report on the impact of foreign aid reduction on women’s organizations. According to the report, organizations focusing on women’s rights and support may stop providing essential services by 2026 due to the financial crisis.
The most vulnerable will be women and girls in frontline areas and remote settlements, as well as elderly women and women with disabilities. It is projected that organizations can provide assistance for no more than six months at the current level of funding. Losses for women’s organizations in Ukraine could reach 52.9 million dollars by the end of 2026.
In her statement, UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous emphasized the need for more stable funding to continue providing vital services. She noted that cooperation and investments in women’s organizations will continue, but it is not enough.
The UN has already reported that 2025 became the deadliest year for the population of Ukraine in recent years.
